When I first came to Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, I had several pieces in mind to complete. As I took in the big sky, hilltop views, bullfrog chorus, and wooded trails, I realized that much of the work I make and think about in NYC wouldn’t be relevent here. In the city nature is a block of blue Harlem sky seen through the bars of my studio window and the pigeons strutting on top of the empty building across the way. It is a fern unfurling from a crack in a stone wall, the stark winter branches that are lines drawn against grey skies, and the upward spiraling dance of leaves over the subway grate as the trains pass below. At Stone Quarry Hill, longing was replaced with bliss. I decided to complete “A Tangled Tale” – a fragmented fairy tale of sorts that celebrates the magic and mystery of being in the woods.

As someone who walks miles everyday both to nourish my soul and, of course, to get where I need to go, I was also happy to place the mirrored park sign “YOU ARE HERE” at the edge of one of the woodland trail paths. All of life is a journey – sometimes the path is clear but often our thoughts are far removed from the realities of the present. It is my hope that park visitors who come upon the sign and their reflection in the woods will acknowledge that very simple moment of finding themselves “here.”
